What is a pyromusical?

A pyromusical is a show format in which fireworks effects are choreographed second by second to a piece of music. In an ordinary display, shells are simply fired in sequence; in a pyromusical, the music is analysed bar by bar, the exact moment each effect must open in the sky is calculated backwards, and a digital firing system ignites every shell with millisecond precision.

Between ignition and the burst opening in the sky there are 2–8 seconds depending on calibre. The designer computes this delay for every single effect — so when the crescendo reaches the sky, the music reaches its peak.
